A letter · after midnight

Sealed Nocturnes

On the last night of every month, after midnight, a letter leaves my desk. One nocturne, written from sensation rather than argument, with one record chosen for one hour of the night.

It is not published anywhere, and it is not kept. A Nocturne exists the night it arrives, in the inboxes of the people who were there for it. What is missed stays missed.

One letter a month, on the last night. Nothing else, ever, and you can leave at any time.

What arrives

A letter, hour-stamped and sealed at whatever minute it was finished. Some months it is a room, some months a habit, some months a question I have been circling. Always one record, and always when to play it, because music is the one art that is intellectual and bodily and made of time all at once. I will tell you what to notice in your shoulders when it plays. Once in a while I will name the scent on my wrists as I write, so the letter arrives with a little of the room still in it.

It closes with the season's kept hours, which is my quiet way of saying where I am and when.

Why nothing is archived

Because a letter that waits forever is not a letter, it is a page. These are written for a night and for the people holding them that night. Later this year there will be a way to keep a season of them properly, on paper, sealed in wax and numbered by hand. I will tell you when that is real.

What it is not

Not an offer, not a diary, and never a queue of announcements. Replies reach me and I read them at night, which is the correct hour for true sentences. You can leave whenever you like, and I will not write to ask why.

I would rather be read once, and properly.
