Beyond Amsterdam · By prior arrangement

The Netherlands,
within reach

I am an independent companion based in Amsterdam, but the country is small, the trains are fast, and a good invitation travels well. Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven, Maastricht: if the evening is considered, the city is rarely the obstacle.

Amsterdam is where I live. It is not where I stop.

How evenings travel

Outside Amsterdam, plainly

An evening in another city needs exactly four things decided early: the city, the hours, the hotel or table, and enough notice. Everything else works the way it always works.

Choose a little more time

Outside Amsterdam, an invitation breathes better with more hours around it. Four or more lets travel disappear into the evening instead of framing it. For the furthest corners of the country, an overnight often makes the most sense.

The arrangements are identical

Screening once, deposit to confirm, discretion in both directions: the etiquette does not change with the postcode. Travel arrangements and expenses are agreed in advance, so the evening itself stays effortless.

Hotels are the natural habitat

A good hotel, with its restaurant, its bar and its privacy, is the simplest setting for an evening outside Amsterdam. Name the hotel or the neighbourhood in your note and I will tell you honestly whether it suits.

Notice is kindness

The further from Amsterdam, the more notice makes everything graceful. A week is comfortable; more is luxurious; same-day is, with rare exceptions, a no. Screening deserves better than haste.

Where invitations tend to lead

Cities I am glad to be invited to

The Hague

Quiet class, embassy calendars, seaside at Scheveningen.

By invitation · simply write

Utrecht

Canal cellars and a station forty minutes from anywhere.

By invitation · simply write

Leiden

Bookish, calm and criminally underrated after dark.

By invitation · simply write

Eindhoven

Design, technology and hotel bars full of interesting travellers.

Maastricht

The most European evening the Netherlands can offer.

Not on the list? The Netherlands has more good tables than famous cities. Haarlem, Delft, Groningen, ’s-Hertogenbosch and anywhere with a serious hotel are all within reach of a well-written note. And for invitations beyond the border, there is Elsewhere.

The constant

The city changes. The evening does not: a good table, real conversation, and privacy that holds.

Wherever we meet, you are meeting the same woman with the same standards, the ones described on the etiquette page, valid nationwide.

Name the city, and the rest follows

Invite me somewhere worth the train ride.

Write with the city, the date, the hours and where you would like to begin: a hotel, a table, a bar with proper chairs. I will reply within a day if it feels right.

I know the good quiet corners of more cities than I admit.
