Rotterdam · By prior arrangement

An evening in Rotterdam

Amsterdam is romantic by inheritance; Rotterdam earned it, with steel, water, ambition and the best skyline dinners in the country. I am an independent companion based in Amsterdam, and Rotterdam is the invitation I say yes to most easily.

Forty minutes by train.
Closer than your last excuse.

When this city makes sense

Three Rotterdam evenings

The business evening

In town for meetings, staying somewhere tall with a view of the Maas, free from eight? Rotterdam evenings are made for this: dinner without small talk you did not choose, and company that improves the skyline.

The dinner that becomes a night

The city takes food seriously and lights itself beautifully after dark. Four hours disappears fast between a chef’s menu and a last drink somewhere high up; six is kinder.

The overnight at the hotel

Rotterdam’s hotels were built for far more than a night’s sleep. An overnight here runs from dinner through the night to breakfast with the harbour waking up below, and it is one of the easiest elegant evenings in the country.

Rotterdam, practically

Asked and answered

Everything else, from screening and deposits to discretion and etiquette, works exactly as it does anywhere: plainly described on the etiquette page, valid in every city.

Do you actually come to Rotterdam?

Gladly and regularly. It is barely forty minutes from Amsterdam, which makes it the easiest "elsewhere" there is. Rotterdam invitations are welcome by prior arrangement, like everything else.

Is a hotel required?

A good hotel is the natural setting: its restaurant and bar for the evening, its privacy for the rest. Name the hotel or the neighbourhood in your note; if something about it does not suit, I will say so honestly.

How much notice do you prefer?

Enough for screening to happen without haste; a week is comfortable. Same-day requests are, with rare exceptions, declined. Calm arrangements are half the pleasure.

Which invitation suits Rotterdam best?

Four hours upwards. The Unhurried Date suits a dinner; The Evening Apart lets the night stretch; Night Into Morning was practically written for harbour-view hotels. Travel arrangements are agreed in advance, as described on The Hours.

Beyond Rotterdam

The whole country is one page away, and the overnight world has its own.

Rotterdam, then

Name the hotel, the date and the hours.

A clear note with the city included is all it takes. Screening and a deposit confirm the evening, and the skyline does the rest.

I will bring better conversation than the harbour view.
